Program Description

The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Internship Program at Hartnell College supports and engages students in undergraduate academic research and/or professional internship experiences. Internships include relevant and innovative projects with regional research institutions, local partners or national REU (research experience for undergraduates) programs. Internships are guided by mentors and supported by training in research, presentation skills, communication skills, professionalism, and transfer preparation for upper division and graduate studies. Students are also given the opportunity to share their work with academic and professional communities through presentations and publications.

Over the past several years, our unique STEM Internship Program has achieved unprecedented success, matching hundreds of community college students with university researchers and industry experts in prestigious laboratories throughout the Central Coast.

What is an internship?

An internship is an excellent way for a student to gain relevant experience in a particular career or field of study. An internship can expose students to careers or fields of interest to help determine if they have a genuine interest in that particular field. Internships are an excellent way to begin building important connections that are invaluable in developing and maintaining a strong professional network for the future. Opportunities in our program range in commitment level and scope. In Micro Internships you can participate in Hartnell faculty-led, 25-hour STEM exposure offered with a variety of timings, year-round. A variety of full and part time summer internships can allow you to delve deeper in a topic related to your major or interests. Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) are available at universities and colleges across STEM fields around the region and nationally.

What is a Micro-Internship?

Micro-Internships (MI) are designed to reduce barriers and inequalities inherent in the internship paradigm by providing access to professional, experimental, applied, and research skills for 200+ students per year. It is a project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) grant ESTEEM (Award #1832446), for STEM Building Capacity and Improving Undergraduate STEM Education at HSI.
